Rarely does a song come together with the seamless roll we hear with Saint Jaimz’s “AWOL (Absent Without Love)”. This performer, a sixteen year Army veteran, has made astonishing progress since first emerging and his intimate, thoughtful confluence of an entertaining form like R&B couples up well with a lyrical sensibility that connects with listeners yet is clearly a cut above the customary work in this area. Jaimz aspires to imbue a personal message of some sort in each of his songs and succeeds in depicting a situation when you realize how you’ve held on too long with someone who, in the end, drained your joy for life. This might sound like a downer in terms of subject matter, but Jaimz makes it a surprisingly exultant affair, cognizant of the pain, but ready with the will and strength to move on.

I don’t know for certain if DawgGonDavis is secretly masterminding a plan to take over the hip-hop charts with her new four song extended play Anthem Pandemonium, but even if she’s just out to spread the word of Operation Breakthrough and their crucial work to stamp out domestic poverty her latest release is more than worth your time. I first became familiar with DGD’s music through the single “Butt on Fiya,” which is included in Anthem Pandemonium I might add, and haven’t been able to look away from her career since. She’s funny, smart and a lot more adept at making intricately complex rap songs than you might expect from an IT project manager, but that’s the whole point of her music. She wants you to question the stereotypes and stigmas that you attach to people, illnesses and even culture itself and reassess your opinions. There really is no better way to get people to change their evil ways then through the power of comedy and music, and thankfully DGD is highly equipped to do both brilliantly.

AV Super Sunshine has built one of the strongest reputations in the EDM style as a performer and composer unwilling to limit himself. The subject matter is rather traditional as it celebrates sex with just enough innuendo to communicate its message and never lapses into the sort of off-putting crudity often alienating wider listening markets. A bold organ. Smooth humming. The squeal of a funky, wah-wah laden guitar. Pouncing of the percussion, and we’re off and running. “It’s Alright,” a mid-album slice of pure soul off of Crack of Dawn’s new LP Spotlight doesn’t waste any time getting us into the groove of things and taking us to a gravity free space where we can sail in between the melodies like we’re just another note resonating from the band’s amplifiers. If you’re getting the impression that there’s quite the psychedelic bend to Spotlight, then I’m doing a good job with my description. To say that psychedelia tinged funk ala George Clinton wasn’t a contributing influence on these cats would be a far stretch of the imagination, and Crack of Dawn doesn’t have any problems admitting just as much in their music. In a celebration of love, life, laughter and whole lot of truth, the band crafts their melodies around their deeply soulful introspections, and the result is an intoxicating meld of intricately arranged, jazz inspired cerebral R&B that could give the style the shot of adrenaline that its desperately been needing in the last few years.

BWH Music Group is becoming one of the go-to sources for new content of all styles and varieties, and the label’s new comp That Summer doesn’t disappoint when it comes to showing off the highest caliber material their artists are coming up with these days, especially on the hip-hop and R&B front. “Guns”, the first of Nick Andre’s two new singles we’re discussing, isn’t a bountiful musical feast and its primary element is the vocal track. Andre surprises listeners a bit with the chorus as the vocals cop a near R&B/gospel feel squarely at odds, yet remarkably sympathetic in this instance, with the solidly rap vocals during the song’s verses. The intensity is palpable despite this seemingly oddball marriage of styles. Andre’s ideas for the song are uniformly strong; a good example of that is how the chorus vocals swell when they return following the conclusion of the verses. Much of the song is built around this near acapella approach and the percussion gives it increased urgency. His production choices in that area are equally keen; the drums underline every vocal nuance in both styles.

The art form of protest music shouldn’t be relegated to strictly coffee house acoustic acts and raucous punk rock units who have no regard for the non-abrasive sensibilities of the current generation of music enthusiasts. When you think about it, music doesn’t even have to challenge the autocratic notion of established order in its lyrics to inspire a rebellion that will change the landscape of pop forever. We’ve seen countless soft rock acts leave an imprint on music that was just as insubordinate in its foundation as some of the raunchiest, most extreme of transmissions from the underground. And yet we still uphold this falsehood, this flat out fallacy, that to affect significant change in your scene, you have to be the loudest voice, the most noticeable explosion in a series of chaotic disasters to really get anyone’s attention enough to make a difference. That’s not only a completely irrelevant and fake news-influenced theory, but it’s dangerous to the development of independent music in the 21st century. “Dogs” the latest output from Canadian rhythmist Mike Ra, doesn’t wear a political motivation on its sleeve, but the overwhelming message in its lyrics is one of individuality and independence that has become synonymous with the current movement of indie rap artists both north and south of the U.S.-Canadian border.
