It either comes natural or else it stands out like a swollen thumb. S-Trill’s early life is shaped by the tragedy of losing his dad at the age of seven, but it’s obvious that his attitude is to make lemonade when life hands off some lemons. He embraces the right influences for his early work like this and they come through loud and clear in his music, but there’s never any sense that he’s just some shoddy imitator looking for a piece of the pie – instead, he comes across as someone informed by certain styles of music and possessing the necessary talents to take things in his own direction. S-Trill’s already landed in a big way and his impact will grow even deeper thanks to the single “On the Phone”.

They are about the idea of, “Everything is fine.” This is a great way of prefacing the album. The music is very even and relaxed, just as a Happy Camper is relaxed. Frey said he worked on the music just before his wedding and his search for a steady state of mind.

“No Rules” is one of three tracks Emanuel Williams, aka Swaylex, has uploaded to YuoTube to illustrate his multi-instrumental and compositional talents. This song alone is enough to prove the young musician is a formidable talent who, even in the ruins of what was once dubbed the music industry, possesses the hunger for success and skills to cut through the dross and rise to the top. The instrumentals show an ample amount of chops – it’s impossible to deny that when you’re dealing with a multi-instrumentalist – but “No Rules”, as are the others, retains an innate accessibility few enormously talented musicians can balance out. Swaylex, however, does it with little apparent effort. “No Rules” is an excellent title for referring to his musical approach. Swaylex’s compositions don’t respect rules, break with convention, and show that it is still indeed possible for one musician to be an one man band.

The latest release from Spayyzee, otherwise known by his birth name Michael Plotkin, is the second single from his soon to be delivered debut album. “Work for It” is a hard-hitting testimony to the sacrifices required for a performer to end up something more than a flash in the pan sensation and still contains enough entertainment value to show great allure for many listeners. DC Steez is prominently featured in the track as well and his more rugged, swaggering style makes for an interesting contrast with Spayyzee’s take on the material. The production has a stripped down, spartan approach emphasizing the two voices, but the vocals and music alike strike a perfect balance that keeps everything lean and muscular. The song runs just a bit over four minutes and remains entertaining throughout. If this track is any indication of the quality listeners will encounter on the debut, Spayyzee’s forthcoming release heralds the beginning of a fantastically successful career.

Los Angeles: The Abduction is the latest release from The Spider Accomplice. It’s the second entry in their Los Angeles Trilogy and carries on the highly imaginative work heard on the earlier album Los Angeles: The Trap while still building it with an even more inspired approach to their trademark melodic hard rock style. It isn’t all guitar bashing and percussion histrionics though. The band incorporates an assortment of soundscapes and alternative textures into many of the EP’s six songs without ever diverting themselves from their core sound. The lyrical content has an idiosyncratic slant, but it is remarkably poetic at times and vocalist VK Lynne delivers the lyrics in a variety of inventive ways while maintaining a consistent approach across the board. Her fellow musicians Justin Lee Dixon on drums and Arno Nurmisto on guitar and backing vocals provide all the needed after punch to make this a knockout effort from its first track to its last.

D Clak, after a decade of mix tapes and live performances in and around the Pittsburgh area, has released his first album The Dime Piece. The single “Trap Again” from that album is a extremely well produced outing for this young hip hop artist that combines considerable finesse with a rough and ready approach to life exuding confidence and sure-footed musical inclinations. It clocks out at a little past the three minute mark, but D Clak takes listeners on an entertaining journey during that brief window of time. It’s a groove-oriented backing track he works with here and proves himself a capable enough rapper and vocalist that he instantly finds the groove and rides it with a combination of cool detatchment and well placed engagement that the material deserves. There’s no question it is autobiographical, even D Clak makes no bones about that during his performance, but there’s nothing unduly prettied up for public consumption.
