Port Alberni, British Columbia, Canada — Across Canada the social atmosphere of our cities, towns and special places have been dampened by our collective effort to stop the COVID-19 virus.
The weight of the pandemic has hit the music industry particularly hard as public health has suspended music performances of all kinds.
This has not however, stopped music from being made. Tucked away in a home in North Vancouver three members of a household have adapted by creating music and songs that are hopeful and positive for a people challenged by a pandemic. Their first completed project is a song called, “It’s a New Christmas”.
Music makers, Charles Lysne, Ismat Merali, and André Gautron virtually teamed up with Rory Rickwood, a songwriter from Port Alberni, BC.
Rory came up with simple, memorable lyrics that not only focus on our shared Christmas experiences, but also encourages love and hope with which we can push back the proverbial night.
Making this Christmas song unique is that it uses the strongly accented subsidiary beat and staccato chords of reggae music. Traditionally, reggae songs come from the voice of the oppressed that discuss personal matters of love and hope.
While our street corners, waterfronts, and special places are a little quieter, you may hear a jingle-jangle sound telling us a new Christmas is coming our way.
