Rebecca Rogers Davis works as an IT project manager during the day, but her life away from the 4o hour a week grind finds her taking on a very different identity. She expresses her lifelong love for music and composing under the persona of DawgGoneDavis. DawgGoneDavis has a playful take on hip hop tradition that aligns her, in some respects, with Weird Al Yankovich’s song parodies. Despite the light hearted nature of her songwriting, Davis is a deceptively astute songsmith who intuitively understands how to craft a catchy hook that lingers with listeners long after the song ends. Her latest release are a pair of singles entitled “Forever Music” and “Butt on Foya”, two songs building on the success of DawgGoneDavis’ first single “Middle Age Woman – Hip Hop Style” while solidifying her position as one of the best parodists on the indie songwriting scene today.

This has been such an epic year for hip-hop, from the inspiring number of new artists who have come out of the woodwork to the new, inventive promotors, producers and labels that are staking claim to the future of the industry as we know it. BWH Music Group is becoming one of the go-to sources for new content of all styles and varieties, and the label’s new comp That Summer doesn’t disappoint when it comes to showing off the highest caliber material their artists are coming up with these days, especially on the hip-hop and R&B front. I had a chance to preview That Summer before it hit the marketplace a little earlier this year, and although I’ve never been much for comps and mixtapes, I found what BWH had put together to be deeply compelling and required listening for any music enthusiast.

“Guns”, the first of Nick Andre’s two new singles we’re discussing, isn’t a bountiful musical feast and its primary element is the vocal track. Andre surprises listeners a bit with the chorus as the vocals cop a near R&B/gospel feel squarely at odds, yet remarkably sympathetic in this instance, with the solidly rap vocals during the song’s verses. The intensity is palpable despite this seemingly oddball marriage of styles. Andre’s ideas for the song are uniformly strong; a good example of that is how the chorus vocals swell when they return following the conclusion of the verses. Much of the song is built around this near acapella approach and the percussion gives it increased urgency. His production choices in that area are equally keen; the drums underline every vocal nuance in both styles.

Florie-Laure “Lauria” Zadigue Dubé, from Montreal, CA, debut single release “Losing Me,” is a remarkably well-written, produced and arranged track, especially for the first release. Having grown up around music via her uncle’s basement studio, it’s no wonder the song is so good because Lauria is certainly no stranger to music. The track shows so much promise it is bound to reach the masses in no time flat. It’s that fantastic for numerous reasons, starting with her hypnotic vocal delivery and ending with the right beats and melodies to round out what is ultimately a hot new single in which she can be proud.
