Here lies a mixtape that was released by SUMO (Jacob Pnake & Malcolm) in 2017. The self produced project was an atmoshpere of its own in which the listener was thrust into an audibly pleasing arena. The only regret that came with dropping this mixtape was naivety. SUMO had no experience with marketing and promotion. a whole summer creating something that could possibly be critically acclaimed only to find years later that they did not go about it correctly. This time around however, SUMO understands that patience is a virtue and if you believe in something, you might end up pushing it for years. The first song titled Utangulizi (south african dialect for “introductory”) finds the SUMO boys ranting about why they hate summer. At first the subject matter seems a bit kiddish in a way because it deviates from conventional subject matter, but the way the production meshes perfectly with the vocals create a listening experience that resonates very well with the listeners.

El Cannon’s “New Freedom” is a masterful hip hop record worth your time. The record starts with “Lord Knows” and there’s a slow build up to it but once it starts, it’s great. It’s a very easygoing tone of voice. He’s got compassion intertwined with a realness. Come “Real Niggas” it’s clear that El Cannon doesn’t play around. He’s about keeping it straight with his rhymes. When it comes to “Outkast,” he has a winner on his hands. You don’t really hear a lot of songs like this in hip hop. It’s more a subject matter for pop punk and rock, but this idea of the outsider - it’s beautifully done here. It’s pretty chill when it comes to this record but we get a little pep in the step as we get into “Ridin Low.” What I appreciate about this record is that it sounds well done. Things are crisp and clear and you don’t ever feel like you’re listening to an underground artist. El Cannon has his bases loaded and this one is hitting it out of the park. MaC Dee’s “Kim” starts with a traditional intro and then goes into “What?” featuring Noble. It doesn’t have a traditional flow to it. The rhymes come out in this unstructured manner but it works. As the chorus rolls through, it’s like a mixture of monologues and music. With “On U” we get a bit of a funky meets R&B vibe with the music and because of that, the words come through in a finer manner than the last. The title kind of makes you expect it, but MaC Dee and Vanhook’s “Magical Woman” does have this magical touch in the beats used. Almost a throwback to ’90s R&B for a second. Don’t adjust the volume when “Understand (Karma In Magnitude)” comes into play. It will start soon enough and when it does, you’ll have one of the best on “Kim.” In the end “Keep It Movin’” caps off the record with a ’70s feel that MaC Dee makes come full circle back to the present day with his delivery. The title track kicks this record off with a note and then gets into the music that would be the soundtrack to any block party. “Steady Hustle” brings to life a similar vibe from the last while “2 for Me” featuring EnCrowd G is more like a song you’d hear if Chris Brown teamed up with the likes of Tyga. Kapitol HP brings what he declares a “strip club anthem” to the table, or rather stage, with Bryan Jones. Together they’ll make booties clap with “Face Down.” From the ladies on the stage to “Diamond Girl,” this song sounds like it could still be be the perfect fit for a gentlemen’s club down in Atlanta. Jackson Myers’ “Underprivileged” is not what I expected, but it definitely exceeded expectations. “Lyons Square Park” starts with this ominous intro that goes straight into a reality charged outlook on life. You don’t get the artist but the man Myers really is with this. With “Jordans On A Saturday” featuring aReJay Ella, it’s not what I expected. I thought based solely on the title that this would be a lighthearted track about some kicks. Instead it is a passion fueled piece broken apart by Ella’s bursts of soul. The music takes a break with “Taking Names” as it’s a well spoken track. Then we’re back with the chilling “Heavy Metal Rally,” while we close out with “Villania/In My Time Of Dying.” The last track brings us full circle with a sense of elegance throughout. Staxkz’s “Separation Anxiety” mixtape is jam packed. “Educated Ignorance” starts the record off with a blast. Without seeing what this emcee looks like, you can hear a since of youth in his voice. Not in a way that he is all about fun, but just he has a young sound like he’s in the same game as Tyga and Drake. The title track starts off a little funky, but in a good way. Page and Powers’ “The Sky is Where You Fly” has more heart than a cardiologists office. The record opens up with the title track. It’s a positive message surrounded by a chill beat. It’s not uncommon to hear a love song in hip hop, but it’s not the norm on every album. That’s where Page and Powers differs with “Beautiful You Face.” It’s sweet and sentimental and a new side to get to know. That sentiment continues out throughout and then there’s a special shout out to the parents out there. “Remembered Always” stands out for the subject matter - most definitely. It’s interesting to hear a song about mothers and fathers. Usually it’s one or the other, or neither. All in all, this is now a hip hop record that has street cred in mind. There’s a lack of club hits, curse words and aggression - but it’s hip hop - just on a different page. Dossman Thomas has a lot going on, but it all shapes up and meshes well. “Give ‘Em Hell!” has a fun feel to it and will remind some of what Mac Miller’s been spitting out. That frat rap vibe. With his buddy Zach Kramer by his side on “Love,” he really changes it up and gives us a track that has a more seductive demeanor. One would think “Nosebleed” would have this aggressive beat but really, it’s like Neo-Soul music intertwined with some attitude. Tino hops on “What To Do” and that seduction is back, but not in the lyrics. Lyrically this sounds like it could be the theme song for every 20-something. “Said A Lot” brings us back to that Neo-Soul but the vocals match up this time around. In the end Dossman Thomas has a lot of elements to his sound. He’s one part soul, a hint of frat and has a dash or two of sass that creates a sound that everyone from fans of Mac Miller to Wiz Khalifa would enjoy. California is known for a lot; beautiful beaches, majestic mountains and of course hip hop. While it started out east, the rap that came out California had something unique about it and that’s what Kydd Raz has done on his latest, “Heart of Cali.” “Bars of Dope” opens the record and comes across with a lot of bite. It has this angry vibe but keeps you interested with the stellar beat. Heading into “IDGAF” we’re introduced to another great beat. The flow of the lyrics are chill and the pace a bit relaxed so they work in unison. Kydd Raz offers some life advice with “Don’t Be No Punk.” The music of this one reminds me a lot of the last track. The title track has a lot to live up. It does the trick in delivering listeners an overall great musical aroma. It has some attitude, but you can’t help but learn the words and then try and spit it out yourself. Closing out the album is “Wit This Shit.” This one caps things off with a track that sounds like it could’ve been the musical child of Mystikal and Snoop Dogg. What you get it a chilled stack of rhymes. Black Out’s “Throughell4wealth” is a healthy dose of rap, rap and more rap. “Sanctuary” starts out in an eerie way with a childlike intro but as soon as Black Out comes in, all that is pushed aside and his audacity takes over. It takes a second for “You Playing” to get underway but it’s worth the wait. It doesn’t go hard, but it has this very easygoing pace that has a chilled feel to it but it keeps the swag high. Smacks hops on for a double dose of hits on “All This Hell” and “Never Stop.” Things take an aggressive turn with “My Future” but it’s welcomed. It showcases that this is an artist who doesn’t mess around and won’t be pushed around. We close out with a great start on “The End.” That feminine touch at the start is way better than where this mixtape started with that horror movie like children chorus. “The End” is the perfect well, end to the record. Heatho the Pharaoh’s “#YGSU” is a throwback to some classic hip hop. We waste no time and jump right into things at the start of the record with “O.S.N.S.” It has this low key attitude to the delivery but one cannot deny that it’s fly as heck. For a song called “Dat Loud,” it’s not as wild as one would initially assume. It’s rapid at times, but not this overtly hype track that would turn it out. We step back into the late ‘90s with “Candy Alligators.” It sounds like something from those days of Cash Money. As the record plays on, “Get It, Got It, Good” is where that wild track comes in and makes you stand up and take notice of what Heatho the Pharaoh can really do as an artist to get the party started with a reality based jam. Closing out the album is one with a futuristic feel, “Gorilla Ballz.” The beat has a spacey vibe and it’s a good way to cap things off. 7 Solo has an abundance of things going on when it comes to “The Grand Incredible Mixtape.” “Relocator” opens us up to an emcee who has a light beat but a fierce bite. As we head onto “We Gone Make It Jump,” the intro sounds a bit like Jay Z welcoming us in, then things stray away from that and it turns into something that sounds like a song LL Cool J may have released around the same time he did that track for “Deep Blue Sea.” We pick things up and head to the dance floor with “Write One” and then strap up for “Boot Camp.” What’s great about that one is that it sounds like something you’d hear at an actual boot camp, one that Major Payne ran. When it came to “Wild With Cheese,” it was hard to say you knew exactly what to expect. It was a little street, but a little funky - in a good way. If you were to ask the direction this mixtape had, you’d be spinning in circles. It’s all over the place but in a way that makes you want to try and navigate it. Travis M.’s “The MisUnderstood” is a blast from the past with a note in the present. After we get through the introduction we head into “Process.” It is a really laid back track. I thought from the intro that this one was going to be a ratchet record, instead this song came on and was well composed and straight laced. With the title track we get a fresh beat that has an old school, ’80s feel. With “BEAST” I thought we’d step up the energy a bit, and I was kind of right. The rhymes come a bit faster than we’ve gotten so far and it was a nice shake up. Travis M.’s pal Gina Smith hops on to help out on the anthem-like gem “Faith” while Serene gets in on the fun with “Gennesis.” As the record rolls on you can hear his influences that sound a bit New York in “Dream Land Gone Wrong.” He ends things with “Monsta with Xan.” This one really picks it up and comes across like a different artist. Travis M. gives us an old school feel in 2015 and it’s a reminder that some young emcees are still picking things up from the past and making them new again. Get familiar with J.O.E.Y’s “Biggest Fan: Biggest Critic” record. We start things out slow with “G.M.T (All A Nigga Need).” In case you’re not in the know with the acronym, the song spells it out clearly; girl, money and team. When you’re young that seems to be all you need. That’s where this music is targeted at - those who are young and still learning the ways of the world. Stylistically “Dreams Money Can Buy” is great. The odd background noise in the music you hear slightly at the start and throughout pulls the curiosity out of you. Then we get to this chilled love track, “I Wanna Be You.” Vocally you’ll know it’s J.O.E.Y but musically it sounds like a different artist than the previous tracks. This only goes to show how eclectic this artist can be. His growth is throughout a record instead of a career. You have youthful hip hop intertwined with relaxed beats and then samples of pop tracks tossed in with “Deep” that samples the Adele hit. We pick things up as we roll on with “Rollin’” that steps it up energywise. The best though seems to be “Dreams.” The hook is stellar and comes through like perfection. Carmen Skyy: Backstage

Carmen Skyy is a female emcee that has an huge amount of talent encased in her mixtape “Backstage.” The “Intro” sounds like something you’d hear in a movie. It’s less musical and more Lifetime biopic. Then the actual music settles in with the title track featuring Rheka. It doesn’t sound like a overly pop track, it has substance to it. Giel hops on to help with “Glitter” and unlike that Mariah Carey movie, this “Glitter” is something to put on repeat. Things do get a little pop, but more on the dance side of things with “I’m Ready.” I thought it was reminiscent of what Black Eyed Peas would spit out with Fergie delivering the rhymes. We get a hip hop fueled love song with “I’m a Believer” and then simplify things with “Be.” All in all “Backstage” wasn’t what you’d expect. When it’s easy for female emcees to fall into the same boat and be pushed out to sea, Carmen really does a good job defining her sound and style. David Dennis: Allure

David Dennis’s “Allure” isn’t your typical hip hop venture. The “Intro” of the record plays like a preview for what’s to come and sounds like a quick clip you’d see on YouTube for for an album. It’s less of an intro and more of a preview. From that I wasn’t expecting what came from “Enticement.” I thought this would be a party rock record but instead this song was well composed and showcased a musical maturity. That same mentality flows right into “Elevated.” The lyrics are more sensual than realistic than the last though. That chill factor keeps on going as we glide into “Disbelief.” The best of “Allure” comes with “Isolation.” Which is kind of ironic when you think about it. MURDA 1’s “Lost Soul” is a record overflowing with hits and jams. We kick off this record with the intro and it’s framed with intimidation but then a freestyle comes through and it plays out wonderfully as it goes into something a bit more constructed with a beat. It’s not exactly the John Travolta classic but this “Face-Off” is well, better than that weird movie. Anyways the delivery here is what’s key. I like the pace at which MURDA 1 brings the words to the forefront. There are a lot of great guests on this record from Skoob & Redd on “No Other Way” to just Redd on “My Gang.” That one really gets to the point with repetition. Parents will like “Ask No Questions,” well parents into hip hop because they can relate to the title. You know you’re in for a treat with “Real Niggas Only” based upon the intro alone. Rabanales’ “Real Hip Hop” comes at you from Tennessee. The record kicks off with “Alpha Omega.” The most interesting part of this song is that old school record player feel it has. The background music makes it sound like it’s an album spinning on a record player from the prohibition era. “I Need You” also has this classic feel to it. Rabanales really knows how to pay homage to what came before him. The rhymes are great, but what is really great about this EP is that old school vibe. That stops though once we wrap up “Real Hip Hop” with “Collective Thoughts.” It’s like this journey through time and then he ends with the modern era with just a handful of songs. Bio Organic Weaponry: Bio Organic Weaponry vol. 1

Bio Organic Weaponry sounds like it’d be this industrial rock band that’d tour with either Marilyn Manson or Nine Inch Nails, but nope - that’s not the case. It’s a hip hop group that comes hard with their album “Bio Organic Weaponry vol. 1.” They open the record with “Liquor & Death” and it’s not hard to hear each individual in the group. Sometimes with ensembles it is hard to identify who’s who but not here. Masta Ace hops on “Subconscious Theatre” and I love this one just because of the cool cat jazz-like intro. It was unexpected and that’s always a good thing that’s appreciated. What I heard hear is that Bio Organic Weaponry kind of reminds me of House of Pain. Speaking of unexpected, “The Escape Plan” has a Reggae feel to it and stands out above the rest when it comes through. They group is joined by Khase and Big Tone for “Pyramid” and it is nothing more or less than a grand slow jam. Fitting for Halloween we have “Eulogy of a Dead Memory.” I really like the lyrics of this one and the beat makes this one easy to follow and really take in. Big Tone’s back on “All Seeing Steez” and instantly you can hear the sample they’re using and if you don’t recognize it, please refer to your ’90s catalogue and study. You can’t hate any song that pays respect to the great TLC. Another homage they did? Um, “Betty White.” This may be the first time the Golden Girl may have been mentioned in hip hop and it’s awesome. Official G.A.R.: Mr. Altamirano

Official G.A.R. has a lot to offer but we’re going to focus on his record “Mr. Altamirano.” “Run This City” breaks down what it takes to have a firm grasp on your city. It comes at you with a rapid fire delivery at times but there is a fair balance. I like how “Versace Control” grabs your attention in the intro and then how it comes to a halt and transforms into a song that sounds anew. It was hard to get into “In The Cut” because the beat just wasn’t as attention holding as some of the others. The lyrics were tight but the beat, no so much. I’d like to hear this spit out freestyle. With “Thomas Aquinas” you get a little experimental side from Official G.A.R. It sounds weird and out of character, ironically enough it sounds like he is playing someone else. Stepping away from that we got “3AM In Dallas.” This track takes us back to why we like this emcee. It has a fast approach and comes across as fresh. Brokenglazz: Ear Candy

Brokenglazz’s “Ear Candy” is smooth and sweet rap music. So you have a song called “My Chickens.” This raises eyebrows and you can do nothing but dive in with an open mind. It’s like hip hop took a drive with sensual beat. That sentiment continues on with “Somebody Prey.” Brokenglazz is all about the rhymes but it’s clear that sexy time is on the table and mind as well with these tracks. Again, the delivery and tone just scream sensuality. Why? Well Brokenglazz doesn’t rely on super street beats but rather a more sophisticated sound in songs like “Honey Pot” and “Hater.” Rounding out the record Brokenglazz gets a little dirty with “U Nasty.” It has that sexuality but in a more abrupt and in your face sort of way. Finally “Marias Hot” caps off the record with a little Latin flare but not too much with a very catchy chorus. Durt Road Camp: Welcome 2 Da South

Durt Road Camp’s “Welcome 2 Da South” mixtape is jammed packed of fierce beats and sensitive moments. “100 Barz Or Beta” is a great song based mainly on the beat. I love that it sounds like some AC song intertwined with hip hop. What isn’t that great is that is clocks in at almost six minutes. It definitely needs a radio edit. When you finally get to “You Ain’t Gon Stop This” you have another great beat and a very ferocious delivery from Durt Road Camp. Okay, so if you thought “Lion King” was an ode to the highly successful Disney movie, it’s not. Although that’s the reality of the situation, it comes at you as fierce as the king of the jungle. “He Telling You” calms things down with a spurt of R&B tossed into the mix. Rise - “Do You Know Him?” b/w “Cheater” & “Memories” Rise is sick. We all know it. Ever since he “made rappers shit enough bricks to build a small house” on the 24HourMC Allstar Freestyle with Wordsworth, Tonedeff, Substantial, PackFM, and A.L., Rise has been a standout in the minds of the lucky ones who know who he is. His new 12", “Do You Know Him b/w Cheater and Memories” f/ Wordsworth and Madafi is insane. The a-side will have you nodding your head to a tight beat provided by DJ Spinna, with Rise spitting rhymes like “My name goes so much in the streets/ that I’m told ‘Rise is nice’ by cats that don’t know that it’s me.” But Rise isn’t just a punchliner. In “Cheater,” he tells the story of a messed up relationship between him and his girl, with both of them cheating on each other. Displaying skills like crazy on this cut, his humorous approach to it makes it a fun track to listen to. Then comes “Memories,” which is the tightest track on this stellar 12". Over a sick beat by DJ Static, Words steals the spotlight, but Rise still manages to hold his own. Words goes off about his youth, saying shit like “Scared of the boogieman, I slept with my mom in the bed/ I took the rubberbands from GI Joes and switched the arms and the legs.” Having Words on a song with you, there’s always a risk of coming off wack, but Rise succeeds in still sounding nice. Every track on here is worthy of a spot on almost any mixtape I’ve heard, but nothing here is truly groundbreaking. This WILL get spins if you cop it, and more importantly, it will have you fiending for the material he’s putting out on Bronx Science in a couple of months. Louis Logic featuring R-Son - Guilty As Charged / Logic & Reason

Louis Logic - “Guilty As Charged” / “Logic & Reason” ft. R-Son
One of the underground’s more beloved returns with a second Bronx Science release. Lyrically, “Guilty As Charged” isn’t too much to get excited about, but his latest 12-inch showcases Logic’s serious flows over two dope beats produced by J.J. Brown. Beats and rhymes are more upbeat and cocky on the new release than on his last, which makes for an enjoyable listen. On the A-side, Louis pleads ‘guilty as charged’ to being the illest MC. It’s an overall good track, with three verses linked together with a well-crafted chorus. There’s pure madness on the flipside. R-Son kicks the first verse, making a great appearance over more of Brown’s production. When the hook drops, you’re confronted with incredible scratches and cuts by Brown himself. Logic steps up lyrically with lines like, “…Now I’m trying to leave you locked up in a car trunk/ with large lumps on your dome like the Epcot Center.” On this track alone, Logic’s lyrics and delivery are a bit reminiscent of Eminem, but Logic is far from a carbon copy.

Royce Da 5'9 & Cocoa Brovaz - Let's Grow b/w Get Up

Production: JayDee, Hi-Tek There are few Royce songs that I don’t like. Usually they’re wack when he decides to go thug it out and kill all of us. This track didnt involve any of that, though…it was straight up lyricism and a little storytelling. He talks about Eminem in the first verse, saying “I met this whiteboy one night who turned out to be the illest mothafucka i ever heard in my life/ He took me under his wing, showed me some things/ and molded me into a pro until the flow was mean.” I like it that Royce is showing respect for someone who taught him, and one of his boys, and I think that’s mad cool. All of the verses are at a lyrical level that not many emcees ever reach, so that’s hot. The beat is crazy–better than any of the rhymes. JayDee produced a masterpiece here. In my usual fashion, I’m not gonna do an extensive review of the B-side because it’s really not bad or good. I doubt it’ll get many spins, but it’s really not a bad track. Cocoa Brovaz come nice with a pretty tight beat by Hi-Tek. Overall, I’d say this is worth picking up, if only to play “Let’s Grow” over and over. [HeadLine]

Apathy, Celph Titled & Open Mic - No Joke b/w The Science of Bum Rush

Guests: Celph Titled, Open Mic I’ve been an Apathy fan since I heard his “Just Begun” 12" b/w “Chrome Depot Freestyle”. As far as what I’ve heard, I see him as a consistent emcee with some indefinitely amazing wordplay on his new single. “No Joke” features Celph Titled, who tears the track to pieces. Apathy flips lines like, “i got a problem with the mic, so i solve it like a man/ grab it by the neck and rock it as hard i can” and “i be takin’ out emcees like dogs that need to piss”. I wasn’t aware that Celph Titled could produce and rhyme equally dope. He kind of has an old school flow on this, leaving a lot of time at the end of each of his bars. The simplicity mixed with some of the lines he flips is crazy as hell. My favorite is, “the only time you’ll have safe sex and be felt/ is if you jacked off in a car wearing a seat belt”. Apathy closes the four-minute track with his continuous multi-syllabic rhyming. “The Science Of Bum Rush” is off the chain. Celph spits first, kicking an ill line, “your bitch wasn’t asian but she sure as hell could bang cock”. Next up to bat is Open Mic, but I didn’t hear too much that was quotable. Not bad, nonetheless. Apathy starts off kicking this line, “you couldn’t spit if you was a virgin bitch who hates swallowing”. Celph jumps back into the game spitting nice as usual. Open Mic comes back with a decent line, “the mic’s a part of me that goes together like ghettos and poverty”. His performance is dope, mainly because of his cocky, swift, yet decipherable delivery. Apathy brings the song to an end, spitting a line, “i leave the competition mentally stressed/ like a teenage girl takin’ a pregnancy test”. Both of these songs are sick as hell. I highly recommend picking this 12" up at your local record store because I am honestly amazed by the display of lyricism here. [Jeff]

LL Cool J, Busta Rhymes, Noreaga - Put Ya Hands Up b/w What It Is & Grimy

LL Cool J - “Put Ya Hands Up” b/w Busta Rhymes - “What It Is” & Nore - “Grimy” LL Cool J has evolved from a well-respected hip-hop pioneer, to a sellout emcee who has lost has skill on the microphone. The funny thing is, I never thought he sat down with a pen and said, “I’m gonna make a joint for the radio.” But now, after I see him doing shit with Swizz Beatz like on this a-side, I’m changing my mind. The flow on this is okay, but it’s another sex joint mixed with a party vibe. It’s nothing new, and I just cannot stand to see LL do this when he needs to be respecting the underground. Busta Rhymes is quite a character, on the other hand. Lately, he’s been real “iffy”. Sometimes a song is acceptable, at other times you wanna turn the stereo off. Busta spits on this track with a Neptunes beat (besides it being documented, it has to be due to how goofy it is). The chorus on this is a bag of ass, and it’s like Busta is trying to rhyme so no one hears him. He’s real shy on the mic sometimes. Now back to the production; it’s real shitty, for lack of a better comment. You take someone like the ‘Tunes, who can drop an ill beat like Mystikal’s “Danger” or Ludacris’s “Southern Hospitality”, but then they make this Mickey Mouse bullshit, which has no bounce or nod in it. What a waste… Noreaga is back, spittin’ on another Neptunes beat, which I hate. “Grimy” isn’t something even a Nore fan wanted to hear. Shoot, even Nore himself wouldn’t listen to this. Maybe the only excitement in this is when Nore disses Star and Buc Wild and Tommy Boy Records. He’s still ugly, though. However, even Nore isn’t as ugly as this triple 12". [Jeff]

If I told you to peep this new Deacon shit, you would probaly think its some internet battle, but this is not the case. Deacon The Villian isn’t just some “internet emcee” and Kno isn’t his cyber DJ. CunninLynguists drops there lead single for Will Rap For Food LP coming soon on Urban Acres Entertainment.

First we’re going to start it off with the Celph Titled produced A-side, “So Live!” This song is supposed to be a early days of hip-hop type of song. They do it pretty well, but I would much rather see Kno behind the one’s and two’s instead of him rapping. He comes off good enough to keep me listening to the track, though. Once again Deacon comes off nice on this.

Baldhead Slick & Da Click - “Where’s Our Money” / “In Here” Guru, of the legendary Gang Starr, drops his first 12-inch in an attempt to impress nonbelievers, and possibly prove that he is a dope MC, with or without Premier’s production. Speaking of production, the producers lined up to lay down tracks on the album are of hip-hop’s finest, including Pete Rock, Alchemist, and of course, DJ Premier. Alchemist was just so nice enough to lay down an instrumental for Guru; an instrumental that samples Gang Starr’s “You Know My Steez” from Moment of Truth. Ignoring the twice-used sample, the beat is rather dope, but when you listen, it’s like it’s missing something. After a minute or two you’ll come to realize that it’s missing an M.O.P.- or Canibus-like voice to rock it. Never before has Guru seemed so passive on a track before until this one. From production to lyrics, the a-side spirals downward. After hearing lines like “…for the cash, I’ll take you out and your whole staff/ have you lookin’ funny as hell, but I won’t laugh,” you lose a little interest in the song, and pray for a guest appearance to step in and take over, but when do dreams come true in hip-hop? The b-side sports an incredibly hot beat by none other than DJ Premier’s BROTHER, also known as Biggest Gord, and it looks like piano-heavy instrumentals run in the family. Lyricism and rhyming in general on this joint are at a higher peak with guest appearances by Timbo King, Killah Priest, and Black Jesus. Nothing groundbreaking here, lyrically, but it’s most definitely enjoyable, an overall good song. The Mickey Mouse chorus-chanting at the end could be dropped, but the hook in between the verses is decent. The a-side proves that Alchemist is surely slipping as a producer; from selling the same beat twice to using pre-used samples for the same artist that the original was used for. Biggest Gord is dope, though. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the CD jackets of releases to come.

7L & Esoteric - A New Dope

7L & Esoteric are renowned for creating some of the freshest hip hop music available to fans. A New Dope is unique, powerful and creative. The music is packed with interesting sounds that easily penetrate fans to bring them to an elevated level. It’s with tracks such as “3 Minute Classic" and “Perfect Person" that fans get smacked with two of the most creative & realistic tracks they’ll surely hear on any album this year. Beside the intense, magnificent beats, the on point production and the shining lyrics is the real subject matter that blossoms thoughts in a crowd like Miracle Grow in a rose garden. 7L & Esoteric truly shine with “A New Dope". Fans need to put down the pipe, run to the store and get their fix with this.
The best tracks on the album are “3 Minute Classic" and “Perfect Person". There are other high profile tracks which include “Play Dumb" & “Daisycutta" featuring Kool Keith and not to be forgotten “Girls Gone Wild (Then & Now). “3 Minute Classic" is one of the most interestingly unique tracks ever forged. Featuring an abrasively pounding beat that serves as the backbone to some incredibly raw lyrics listeners are struck with a subtle, nostalgic feeling as they crack some chuckles brought by the witty lyrics. Upon a few listens fans will be thinking “me so horny" as the sample of the women’s voice is sure to get fans excited - literally. The Hercules cuts are refreshing as they are laid into the mix. “Perfect Person" is one of those tracks that spell out every thought every person in a relationship is feeling. Its beat is absolutely dazzling and the lyrics are stacked with realism. This is a witty, well written song that most fans will easily relate to and praise. The change ups & cuts are equally refreshing.
